Art

Students sitting at their desks in art classThe mission of the Hanover County Schools Visual Arts Program is to engage students in thinking creatively and solving problems in order to communicate visually in the 21st century. The universal language of art allows students to make connections and comprehend themes of expression around the world, past and present.

Art at MES

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Mechanicsville Elementary School attend art once a week for 45 minutes. Preschool students have an art lesson for 20 minutes once a week. The content of the elementary art program includes historical and cultural studies, core content integration, two-dimensional and three-dimensional techniques and processes, and a variety of topics to encourage creativity and self-expression.

We expose students at every level to different art-making processes such as painting, drawing, sculpting, and collage or multi-media type projects. In preschool, kindergarten, and first grade, artists focus on tasks that build fine motor skills. Second and third graders learn extensively about different cultures and art around the world. In the fourth and fifth grades, students dig deeper into creative problem-solving, self-motivation, and processes of art.

Teachers send home artwork throughout the year. Many students receive the opportunity to display their works within the school and around the community. While some students create art for its beautiful end product, others create art strictly to undergo the process, a method that yields even more learning and fun.
